EN430 is the European standard that specifies general requirements for the sizing and making of protective clothing. This standard is a reference standard, which cannot be applied on its own but which is often referred to in other specific protective clothing standards e.g. EN471.
EN471 is the European standard for high visibility clothing. It specifies the requirements for signaling the users’ presence day or night. EN471 is grouped into three classes as outlined below, with the classes dictating the minimum quantities of background and retroreflective materials to be used.
This class is required for any person working on or near motorways, dual carriage ways or in airports.
Minimum background fluorescent material (high visibility orange or yellow): 0.8m²
Minimum retroreflective material/tape: 0.2m²
Minimum width of retroreflective material/tape: 50mm
This class is required for any person working on or near any A or B class roads and also for delivery drivers.
Minimum background fluorescent material (high visibility orange or yellow): 0.5m²
Minimum retroreflective material/tape: 0.13m²
Minimum width of retroreflective material/tape: 50mm
This class is required for any person working on a private road or to be used in conjunction with a higher classed garment.
Minimum background fluorescent material (high visibility orange or yellow): 0.14m²
Minimum retroreflective material/tape: 0.1m²
Minimum width of retroreflective material/tape: 50mm
